The article provides a discussion over the role and effectiveness clinical laboratory tests in the delivery of appropriate patient care (Passiment et al., 2012). The authors initiate the discussion by noting that laboratory tests are usually ineffective if the clinicians are unable to access the results in a timely manner. The article notes that a majority of laboratory tests in healthcare settings are slowed down by the overly complex nomenclature (Passiment et al., 2012). Undertaking the right laboratory tests is important towards diagnosis and subsequent treatment of patients. In addition, the article also notes that appropriate laboratory testing and ordering can be improved significantly through the use of artificial intelligence and other sophisticated technologies. These tools can provide physicians and laboratory professionals with multiple and related options. The use of interactive technologies with appropriate interfaces, which enable feedback and preclusion of ordering and interpretation of results from the laboratory tests, is crucial (Passiment et al., 2012). The primary objective of this would be to provide physicians and other professionals with flexible, reliable, intelligent, efficient, and effective tools for ordering and interpretation of results from laboratory tests irrespective of similarities between tests and nomenclature.
