Florence Nightingale Nursing Theory
Florence
Nightingale was a scholar who developed several concepts that proposed an
improvement in the working conditions for nurses. Her environmental theory was
vital in developing an excellent environment for the patient that facilitated
quick and safe recovery. In my workplace, everyone is fully aware of their main
responsibility as providing high-quality care for all patients. It is our duty
to ensure that all patients are given the best treatment (George, 2011). Decisions
involving the hospital environment are mostly made at the higher levels of
administration. However, we can decide how the patients stay in our
establishment. The human factor is well addressed. Our environment is far more
worrying. It is slightly congested with insufficient bed space and wards.
Additionally, the lighting and ventilation was poor. These aspects lowered the
quality of care in the establishment. In terms of the health concept in
Nightingale’s environmental theory, I can say that our establishment has held
the practice of mostly focusing on the ill people. Most of the measures and
effort are directed towards treating already sick people. Hardly any attention
is given to promoting healthy lifestyles and practices such as eating a proper
diet, constant exercise and detoxification. Our healthcare organization adopted
a traditional hospital setting that included constant and cool colors and
limited decorations. The patient was suffering from epilepsy when he was
admitted in the hospital. Nightingale’s theory can evaluate the nursing
interventions that he was subjected. The nurses ensured that a peaceful and
quiet environment was created (Zborowsky, 2014). This involved removing television
sets from the wards and rooms, reducing the alarm and noise volumes as well as
limiting human traffic. The nurses also ensured that the patient received the proper
meals for different times of the day.
